Inland from Port de la Selva, a tortuous road of hairpin bends climbs 675m to a complex of ancient buildings, dominated by the rambling Benedictine Monèstir de Sant Pere de Rodes. There’s space for parking about 500m before you reach the monastery, from where you’ll have to proceed on foot.

Legend has it that, in the seventh century, in the face of barbarian threats on Rome, Pope Boniface IV ordered a safe haven to be found for countless holy relics. They were hidden in this region by a trio of hapless monks, who then forgot where, and so they built a monastery rather than return to face the pope’s wrath. Historians, though, claim that this was the site of an ancient temple of Venus. By the tenth century the monastery had become wealthy: four centuries of splendour ended in 1789 with the site’s abandonment.

Sant Pere de Rodes used to be one of the most romantic ruins in Catalonia. The great feature, apart from the superb views, is the church, which retains tenth- to fourteenth-century stonework in its three naves, including delicate carvings of animals on the capitals. Below the church are atmospheric lower cloisters; excavations have turned up traces of pre-Romanesque murals.

Original from tenth century, despite their ruinous status shows some unique features of its construction, as a singular hole that allowed communication with the neighbour Pení mountain (where there was also a tower defense) and the drawing tiles that are arranged in a spike form (following the style known as opus spicatum).
