Sant Pere Church

Address:Plaça de la Vila. 17255 Begur

The simple lines of the XVII-century Església Parroquial de Sant Pere, renovated in 1996, belie its Gothic interior. A second nave parallel to the first was built in the eighteenth century in place of four side chapels and dedicated to Begur’s co-patron saint, Santa Reparada. In a side chapel to the right, a simple alabaster statue of the Madonna and Child, sculpted by Francesc Fajula in 1985, provides a pleasant contrast to the busy altarpiece, which depicts St Peter holding the keys to heaven. And just outside the west church walls  is Plaça de la Vila, the true center of the village, the venue for the Wednesday market, as well as sardanes most Saturdays in the summer, starting at 10.30pm. A smattering of terrace bars, which fill up during the early evening, occupy one side of the square, while a stone ledge known as Es Pedrís Llarg (“The Long Stone”), running the length of the adjacent church wall, has been used as a shaded meeting place and people-watching spot for as long as the church has been standing. From the square radiates a warren of charming pedestrianized streets, which achieved fleeting Hollywood fame when Elizabeth Taylor filmed a few short scenes in the town for her 1959 film, Suddenly Last Summer.
